Story behind the app

I created Lenstag because camera and lens theft is rampant and there wasn't a list of what gear not to buy anywhere nor any enforcement mechanism to find people buying stolen gear and reunite it with its rightful owner. Plus, story after story of people getting gear stolen, including my wife's Nikon kit, I felt I had to do something. I built the first version while working at Google on my nights, weekends and vacations and I've been working on it ever since.

Lenstag is just me...if you email support, I'm the one that cares of it, along with everything else. I spent the latter half of 2025 and most of 2026 overhauling the website and apps.

I've managed to get coverage for Lenstag in TechCrunch, Lifehacker, PetaPixel, Popular Photography, and more. The biggest win has been that it actually works and if everyone just started using it today, we'd end camera and lens theft tomorrow.

Who built Lenstag?
Lenstag is owned, operated, developed, supported and everything else by me, Trevor Sehrer. I'm a former Google engineer and I've spent my nights, weekends & vacations since 2013 working on Lenstag.
Does Lenstag actually work?
Yes. Stolen gear has been recovered - read about it: Lenstag Finds Photographer's Stolen Camera via 500px. Lenstag has also helped bring camera thieves to trial.
How much does Lenstag cost?
Free for a basic set of gear. Just an email address, password, and the serial numbers of the gear you want protected up to the free limit. Lenstag Pro is available for unlimited gear and many more features.
Why register before my gear gets stolen?
The first few hours after a theft are absolutely critical to getting the word out & preventing resale of the stolen gear. If your gear is already registered, then you just have to flag the items as stolen.

If you wait until after your gear is stolen, you'll have to add the gear, verify it with something else other than a picture of the serial number and wait a day or two for someone at Lenstag to approve the verification request. By then the gear has probably been pawned or sold and the chances of successful recovery are substantially lower.
How does verification work?
I check each photo for typos, fix them if necessary, verify the serial number in the photo matches what was typed and that it's actually the serial number. I also run a bunch of proprietary checks before I approve or reject.
